Friends and Magicians

When her husband leaves on a spiritual journey,
earth-bound Elsa opens her heart to his friend Jerome, with consequences none of them foresee.

In this sample chapter, Elsa clings stubbornly to her idea of home when her husband, Morgan, returns to get his things.

Elsa is shocked and miserable when her husband Morgan announces he wants to move to a zendo many miles from the house they recently bought and which she loves. Her passion for weaving doesn’t compensate for his loss, but his best friend Jerome, a political activist, tries. Elsa is not immune to Jerome’s charms, but she also wants to get to the truth of her own life.

Since her childhood on a Midwestern farm, Elsa has moved to a cosmopolitan city where everyone lives as if on stage and everything one does is a political act. Faced with domestic crisis, Elsa must go deep into her own certainties as she negotiates this shifting world. Magic is often afoot, however, and friendships deepen. One foot firmly rooted, Elsa explores a shining world with the other.

Your book is great, especially your descriptions of food and smell and sound ... The party Elsa threw was wonderful and I really liked how she had come into her own - great ending. This is a great achievement, Connie.

I’m about half way through your book. I love it! It is really bringing me to a place and I’m in their lives.

I think that you describe Elsa’s development very credibly. From her marriage with Morgan (“The only way she knew of relating to a man was total commitment”) to her relationship with Jerome (“Jerome’s occasional attention would show her a different way of being with men”) she feels she has achieved something precious. She tells herself, “What a long way you have come, girl!”
